This scene is a simple demonstration of the animation and depth of field capabilities of Tong. At the start of the animation the focus of the camera is placed on the only visible ship. However, another ship comes into shot and flies past, moving considerably faster than the first. The camera’s focus quickly changes to concentrate on the new ship, making the ship in the background blurry.

This animation would be an ideal situation in which motion blur could be applied. Unfortuntely the ship on the left does go slightly out of focus in the middle of the video. This is because the depth of field is determined using the position of the camera target within 3D Studio Max. This target is keyframe animated and therefore moves between the start and end of the sequence. Due to the angle that the ship on the left is flying towards the camera, its movement is is slightly out of synchronisation with that of the camera target.

The animation is 75 frames long at 25 FPS.

New! Update:
The image on the right was path traced using 100 rays per pixel and IBL lighting. I apologise for the rubbish background.
