This scene shows many different techniques. The most obvious, perhaps, is the reflection on the chess board and pieces. It’s also also subtly applied to the glass on the pictures using a dielectric Fresnel calculation. Also this scene has depth of field applied to it so the viewer knows where to direct their attention. The lighting was deliberately brightened to simulate a room at noon: the light source is streaming through the window onto the floor, the back wall and the chess set table. Photon mapping is used to cast light in the areas that do not have any direct lighting. A comparison can be seen here. Bloom has also been used to make the lighting look brighter than it actually is.
The model was made by Alice Darcy, except the A-wing space ship which was obtained from WolfPak359.co.uk. The full copyright can be seen here.
